This unit broke down the structure of a sentence and how individual words play a role into developing a sentence. One part of speech is a noun. The function of a noun is to name people, place, things, qualities, and states. A noun can be broken down into five main types (common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective), plurals, countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. Another part of speech would be the adjective. The adjective describes nouns. There are comparative adjectives (comparatives) that compare two people or things (adjective + -er than) and there are comparative adjectives (superlative) that compare more than two people or things (adjective + -est). Articles are another part of the sentence structure that could be broken down into indefinite articles and definite articles. Indefinite articles (a and an) refer to any member of a group, whereas definite articles (the) is used when the noun is particular or specific and used before singular or plural nouns. Another part of speech are verbs. Verbs are either transitive or intransitive verbs. Transitive verbs are followed directly by an object. Intransitive verbs cannot be followed directly by an object. Infinitives are formed by preceding the base form of a verb with 'to'. Verbs have four principle forms (base form, past simple, past participle, present participle). There are only three auxiliary verbs (do, have, and be) and they are used to help form tenses. Adverbs add information or meaning the action, quality, or state denoted by verb. Gerunds are verbs that are used as a noun. Pronouns are used in place of more precise nouns or noun phrases. There are personal, possessive, reflexive, and relative pronouns. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in a sentence. Conjunctions have two roles. The first is to join words of the same class and the second is to join two clauses of a sentence. The unit went through a brief overview of meaning and examples with each of these parts of speech.
