This unit goes over the qualities and roles of teachers and students. In particular, it highlights patterned trends that emerge among individuals considered \"good teachers\" and \"good students.\" There are general characteristics that are found in both categories of individuals?some of these characteristics also overlap, such as desire, motivation, willingness/openness, etc. It seems there is an inherent connection between the concept of a good teacher and good student vs. bad teacher and bad student because it is a relationship that is easily affected by either side. Good teachers are able to cultivate ideal learning environments for their students, which raises the likelihood that they will also foster a culture of good learning (and good students). In turn, teachers who are unable to cultivate such an environment for their students are more likely to foster a culture of poor and unmotivated learning. This can potentially lead to the development of what one might consider a \"bad student.\" However, I wonder if it is necessary to place students and teachers into categories of \"good\" and \"bad.\" These words work in relation to a checklist of desirable/redeemable qualities but do not consider other nuances of situational context, emotional strife, or educational background that are important to take into account, as well. The term 'successful' also seems weird to me because while success is measured in very particular ways, success can look like any number of things that can never be exhausted via a list. I do feel like I have learned more about the different roles a teacher might serve. While I have been a student for many years and witnessed all of these roles performed and executed in various ways, I have never taken the time to dissect each specific way a teacher might situate themselves in relation to their students. This will be critical for me to think about as I head into this ETA position because this unit has taught me that a teacher is ultimately more than just a teacher; we are magicians who will need the ability to transform into whatever will best help our students learn and grow.
