The unit is based on highlighting the differences between two class demonstrations (one positive and one negative) and how the teacher impacts the success of the lesson and participation of the students. One of the most important aspects of teaching is establishing a positive rapport with the students to make them comfortable and engaged in the lesson. Teacher body language, gestures, facial expressions, position in the class etc all play a part in setting the scene and tone of the class. In the first video the teacher seemed hurried, disengaged and intimidating which reflected on the students whp seemed confused, embarrassed, shy and uncomfortable. In the second video the teacher welcomed the class with a warm greeting and smile as well as introducing himself. This caused to break the ice and give the lesson a light relaxed feel. Students were thus engaged from the outset and keen to participate, unlike the first video where the students were visibly uncomfortable and unwilling to speak for fear of making a mistake. In the first videp the teacher belitted the students indirectly by putting them on the spot frequently and referring to the material as 'very easy' whereas int he second his approeach was far more encouraging and personable where he referred to students names and praised them for their input. The teacher didn't adequately explain the material in the first lesson which inhibited students understanding and participation whereas in the second lesson the concept was introduced through an engagement exercise that was easy for the students to undertake. In the first lesson the teacher spent alot of time with his back to the class whereas in the second, use was made of gesturing/miming as well as pictures to stimulate student interest and prompt interaction. The most important aspect of teaching is the attitude and energy of the teacher which sets the scene for the entire lesson. A warm, receptive teacher will conduct a far more positive lesson and achieve far higher student participation than one who conveys the message through his/her body language and tone that they would rather be somewhere else.
