This unit describes Modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice. There are 9 true modals in English. They are can, could, may,might, must, would, should,will,rather and few semi modals, eg, have to, need to, ought to,etc. 1. Can can be used for describing ability/possibility,informal permission, informal polite request, rare possibility. 2. Could can be used for past ability,polite request, suggestion,less certainty or improbability. 3. May can be used for polite request, formal permission, less certainty. 4. Might can be used for little certainty or polite requests. 5. Must can be used for obligation, prohibition(in negative form), deduction or very much certainty. 6. Would can be used for polite requests, preferences, repeated past actions. 7. Should can be used for moral obligation, unexpected past results or high certainty. 8. Will can be used for giving orders, requests. 9. Rather can be used for making choices. The students can be taught the modals through role plays, setting rules or guessing the traffic signs. There are 2 types of voices in English - Active and Passive voice. In an Active voice, there is a subject,verb and object. In a Passive voice, the object takes the place of the subject, the tense of the sentence remains unchanged. The passive voice is used when the doer is not known or is not important. It is also used when the importance is on the object rather than the subject. The students can be asked to prepare a quiz using Passive voice or they can match the active voice to its passive voice. Clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. There are 3 types of clauses - Independent,Dependent, Relative. Independent clause is a complete sentence. It has subject and a verb. Dependent Clause is not complete and has to be connected to an independent clause. Relative Clause clause is also a dependent clause but it describes, modifies or gives further information about the subject. There are 2 types of relative clause-defining and non-defining. Phrasal Verbs consists of multi word verbs plus one or two particles. There are 3 types of phrasal verbs- Intransitive, Transitive Separable and Transitive Inseparable.
