The unit talks about the the general attitude of a teacher by using a modal auxilliary verb lesson to demomstrate how the teacher?s attitude, procedure and rapport between teacher and students can be achieved to attain learner objective as well as lesson objective. In the first video the teacher demonstrates the disadvantages of not engaging the students, lack of enthusiasm, undermining students? confidence by repeatedly saying the material is very easy and that anyone can do it.The teacher also demonstrates how not using examples that promote understanding and not monitoring the students in the study phase do not help in achieving success with the lesson.Consequently the students do not understand , feel intimidated and do not participate. In the second lesson the teacher demonstrates how engaging the students helps to get them in the mood to learn. The teacher uses a Straight Arrow ESA lesson style and shows that building rapport (by learning students? names ), using task that promote their understanding, doing right linking between the study and activate stages helps in the understanding of the lesson. The teacher also implores the use of right gestures and miming, correct tone of voice and different prompting techniques to facilitate students? understanding. After watching the two videos I now understand how important it is for the teacher to have the right attitude and be enthusiastic, where lack of these can affect the students? confidence and discourage them from taking part in the lesson, like in video one the teacher reads a book and doesn?t show any interest to monitor if the task is being done correctly.I have also learnt that using clear examples to give instructions can avoid misunderstanding as seen in the second video where some students do not understand the concept of imaginary and used real animals. Most importantly I have learnt that in teaching new language, it is best taught through a topic that catches the students? interest as is the case with using animals and movement verbs in the second lesson to teach the modal auxillary verb ?can? and ? can?t ?.
