Unit 5 provides a look on the basics of setting up and maintaining a learning environment. Again, in my limited teaching experience, I feel like I've learned a couple of these techniques, and I can also see my basic flaws which might of exacerbated the problems I had at the time. Each unit provides a useful insight, but this one really honed down the management side of the classroom. Eye Contact, Gesture, and Voice are the three things a teacher provides while teaching the lessons. While voice carries out the content, gestures and eye contact further solidify and bolster the lessons and how they are presented. Eye Contact provides the students a confident teacher who wants to connect on a personal level while Gestures can act as a bridge between mutual language barriers. Everyone knows a wave or when you are looked in the eye, therefore, eye contact and gestures provide a powerful role. Grouping the students helps change up the classroom for various activities, maintain discipline or loosen the control of a teacher, and it also helps students from becoming bored and leaving them always alert and on their feet. The chapter continues on about pairwork, whole class grouping, smaller groups, and individual work. Each serves a role, and various students will adhere to different groupings. I know when I was a kid, individual work was my choice for I was an introverted learner. Teach Talk Time and Student Talk time is addressed and how to balance the two. Each have a role but Ideally, students come first and need to practice their own english as much as possible. As the chapter continues, it all serves the two final points in the unit: Rapport and Discipline. One is established to, well, be cool! The students need a leader who will teach, and provide in an honest, confident way. The chapter's points help bolster this so the teacher can maintain a great rapport with the students. Also, the points in this chapter help circumvent discipline problems that may arise in the day to day lessons. While naughty students will always happen, having these ideas on how to manage a classroom and further one's rapport can lead to minimal discipline problems.
