I have learnt that a good teacher is passionate about their subject and a good motivator to keep students interested and keen to learn. An excellent teacher has good subject knowledge so they are confident about what they are teaching. They have a positive and caring relationship with their students which means the learners feel well supported. Lessons need to be varied to keep students interested. An English language teacher is an important role model because they are a native English speaker. Their grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation is particularly important to the learner. I have learnt that as an organiser a teacher's lessons need to be well prepared to ensure they are lively and relevant to the needs of the students. A teacher's role as a monitor is important as you need to keep track of what the students are achieving during the lessons and what the next learning objectives will be. The teacher's role as an assessor is important because you need to be able to correct the students, give feedback but at the same time be supportive of the pupils efforts. I have understood that, most importantly, successful learners must have a desire to learn otherwise they will not reach their full potential. They must listen to the language and be willing to experiment when speaking English. By accepting mistakes are part of the learning process it will allow the students to improve their English language skills. I have learnt that the main differences between adult and young learns is that adults bring experiences and knowledge so are therefore more self conscious whereas youngsters are more open minded and therefore less self conscious. This means adults have prior knowledge of their own language whereas the young students are able to absorb a new language in context. I have learnt that there are a variety of language abilities and that learners are grouped into levels of proficiency. This is because a teacher needs to adapt their teaching to the correct level of ability of their students. I have learnt that students are motivated to want to learn English for numerous reasons because this will enable them to improve their opportunities in business, education, travel and future career prospects.
