It is important for both teachers and students to have evaluation and testing in place. Firstly, it is necessary to determine the level of a student before they commence a course, to see what level of knowledge they have in the English language, to place them in the appropriate class level. Placement Tests is the initial test and commences with basic questions that get progressively more difficult. Diagnostic Tests are similar to the placement tests but are a bit more extensive. They determine what the student already knows and helps the teacher to prepare appropriate lessons and concentrate on the areas of difficulty the student experiences. Progress Tests check students? retention of knowledge throughout the course and can be given at the end of the day, or the week, or mid-term, to check that comprehension is retained and ability is being built on as the lessons progress. These tests should include a balance of all the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and grammar. Practice Tests prepare students for external examinations and these tests should follow the format and structure of the external examinations being prepped for. External Proficiency Tests: There are a number of different external examinations used by businesses or universities worldwide, so it will be important for the students to be clear on what direction they are taking so they prepare for the appropriate examination. Such exams are: Business English: TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) Academic English: TOEL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) IELTS (nternational English Language Testing System) General English: Cambridge Suite of Exams include the following 5 tests: 1. KET (Key English Test) 2. PET (Preliminary English Test) 3. FCE (First Certificat e of English) 4. CAE (Certificate of Advanced English) 5. CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) The Cambridge tests can be completed by anybody around the world who wants to use English in their studies or work. The first two would be generally considered as Starter/Elementary Level, preparing them for the third test, generally considered as Upper/Intermediate Level. Tests 4 and 5 are higher level and quite complex.
