I thoroughly enjoyed this unit. It gave such inspiring information and really excited me about the actual class teaching. The Do?s and Don?ts of teaching both Young Learners and Business English Learners were very informative. For Young Learners It is important to keep things simple, speak slowly and clearly, be visual rather than verbal and use repetition and encourage them to talk using pair work. It is also necessary to be patient and be supportive, providing praise as much as possible. Children love to have visual aids, use worksheets and activities with lots of colour, use lots of games, be silly, make fun of yourself, take care to name individuals but not put individuals on the spot on in class. Their motivation is usually on point as they are keen to learn and naturally curious. It is important to know and understand each student as they may have outside issues that affect their learning and behaviour in class, so find this out and assist where possible to encourage them. If there are major issues, this should be reported to the school?s administration. Business Learners should be encouraged as well as make it relevant to their workplace. A needs analysis is important to identify their job, their work requirements, what they are wanting to achieve. A company?s needs are also important as the individual?s job may rely on their ability to master the English language and promotions may also be at stake. Their motivation may not be as strong as they have to do it as instructed by the company. Multi or Monilingual groups are different again. Having the same L1 can be a benefit as they can help each other grasp a concept, but in multilingual classes it can be a bonus they don?t have the same L1 as their only common language is English, which actually promotes more discussion in English. Assessing is important along the way to determine they are meeting needs requirements for a company for Business English Learners and to validate your requirement to assess individual needs. In addition, be professional at all times, keep within the school?s code of conduct, keep records of everything and keep learning fun, encouraging students to map out further learning.
