This unit gives us a brief understanding of Past Tense and its different forms: 1.Past Simple: Past Simple Tense is used to indicate those actions which began in the past time and also got over in the past time. For regular verbs: Affirmative: add ?ed or ?d to the base form of the verb. Example: He Lived in China Negative: add did not or didn?t before the base form. He did not live in China Questions: add did plus subject before the base form. Did he live in China? There is no rules to help students know which are Irregular verb. In this the verb change completely eg: make-made, think-thought, pay-paid. 2.Past Continuous: The past Continuous tense describes actions or events in a time before now, which began in the past and was still going on at the time of speaking. Affirmative: subject + was/were + verb + ing. Example: She was writing a letter last night. Negative: subject + was/were + not + verb + ing. Example: I was not talking during exam. Questions: was/were + subject + verb+ ing. Example: Were you talking during exam? 3.Past Perfect: Past Perfect is used to express the past action, already finishes when another past action happened. Affirmative: subject + had+ past participle. Example: I had seen that play before. Negative: subject + had+ not + past participle. Example: She had not studied for the quiz. Questions: had + subject + past participle. Example: Had he paid all his bills? 4.Past Perfect Continuous: Past Perfect Continuous is used to express a past action which started in the past and continued to happen after another action or time in the past. Affirmative: subject + had+ been + verb + Ing. Example: Sarah had been home doing her homework. Negative: subject + had+ not + been + verb + Ing. Example: Hamza had not been riding his horse. Questions: had + subject + been + verb + Ing. Example: Had she been buying vegetables from the shop?
