One of the elements that success of the teaching process is based on is the teacher?s attitude towards their students, the atmosphere they create in class, so that their students feel motivated to learn. The two videos reflect contrasting ways of approaching teaching. The first video could be placed under the caption ?don?t do this in class??. The teacher makes a series of mistakes that contribute to creating a discouraging atmosphere. It looks like the teacher is only delivering the lesson, not trying to establish a connection with his students, he is critical, his facial expression suggests boredom and absentmindedness, he fails to remember their names. The students are confused and intimidated right from the start, as the teacher announces the subject matter using words/ concepts that the students are not familiar with (e.g. modal auxiliary verbs). He doesn?t even try to explain things in a different manner when students don?t understand. This can only increase the students? confusion and reluctance to get active. On the whole, the impression after witnessing this lesson is that it lacks energy and vitality, which are important when delivering your lesson. The teacher is not only supposed to deliver concepts, but also the joy to learn. The second video is the reflection of a good approach to teaching. The positive energy that the teacher brings to class is felt right from the beginning, he smiles all through the lesson, he remembers his students? names, and gives them positive feedback. He is actively present. The students don?t have a problem understanding what they are required to do, as examples are provided. The teacher speaks clearly, so that the students understand what the task is. The way the lesson is structured also has a beneficial effect on the students, as it first activates the students? previous knowledge, then goes on with introducing and drilling on new grammar structures- the verb can/can?t, and finally activation of the newly acquired structures in a communicative way (description of an imaginary animal). As the students? level of English is not very high, the most appropriate lesson structure for this class is the ?Straight Arrow? ESA type.
