This unit focuses on Past tense. The past tense consist of the following; 1. Past simple tense Affirmative (add ?ed? or ?d? to the base form of the verb) examples; I worked, I played Negative ( add ?did not? or ?didn?t before the base form. Examples I didn?t work, Some examples of irregular past simple tense include; See saw Have had Make made The past simple tense is used for actions completed at a definite time in the past. It is therefore used:- - For a past action when the time is given - When the time is asked about - When the action clearly took place at a definite time even though this time is not mentioned. - Sometimes, the time becomes definite as a result of a question and answer in the present perfect. 2. Past Continuous tense Affirmative ( subject + was/were + verb + ing) Negative ( subject + was/were + not + verb + ing) The Past continuous tense is used as follows; - For interrupted past actions - Used without a time expression, it can indicate gradual development that took place in the past. - It can express an action, which began before that time and probably continued after it. - We use the continuous tense in description. 3. Past Perfect tense It represents actions that occurred before other actions in the past. Affirmative ( subject + had + past participle) Negative ( subject +had + not + past participle The Past perfect tense can be used as follows; - The past equivalent of the present perfect example ? When I arrived, the concert had finished. 4. Past perfect continues Affirmative ( subject + had + been+ verb + ing) Negative ( subject +had + not + been + verb + ing) The Past perfect Continuous certainly isn?t the most frequent used tense in the English language but it does not have one major use. It talks about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. Example ?Before eating lunch, she had been clipping her toenails for two hours. I have personally learnt the different structures of the past tense. How and when they can be used.
