The description of adult business learners in the unit is exactly my experience from 8 years of online and by-phone individual English lessons. The only difference is I never taught groups and I never had to travel. I had some learners whose companies might cut training budgets and they would lose their lessons completely, or they would be shifted to multi-level group instruction with an outside trainer. A couple learners I lost to this phenomenon were not happy because they loved having tailored lessons and they didn't want to be in a multi-level classroom. However, the limitations of one on one have been stated in the unit and are true. I had workarounds, but some learners certainly would benefit from talking with only one person in the target language. In the course of my job, we were trained on the principles of androgogy, which I also see in this unit, and again I am in complete agreement. I really enjoyed adult Business English learners, even though a few of them had been with companies for years, the companies were bought out by an English or American company and suddenly they were being required to speak English late in their career. For these people it was indeed a bit stressful, but especially if they were German, I did everything I could to reassure them that learning doesn't stop once you hit the age of 20, and we just had to account for their strengths. I did encounter one strange phenomenon with Business English that I didn't see here: The companies would pay for the lessons, and yet they sometimes would forbid their employees from taking lessons on company property or during the day. This led to learners getting No-Shows because they'd be stuck in traffic, or they would be coming in the door as I called. Still others were allowed to take lessons from the office but were self-conscious or their office was Open Plan layout. To this day I have not heard anything as distracting as an Italian office with high heels clacking on hard floors, telephones ringing, colleagues all talking in the background, and the poor learner in the midst of all of that trying to hear me. The lucky learners could reserve a conference room, a laptop, and a speaker phone. There are almost endless iterations of the Business English learning environment.
