In this unit, I have learnt more about the types of classes I may be expected to teach as an EFL teacher. Clearly, students who have different abilities and various levels of English will require different approaches. I am now aware that teaching beginners of English, including a variety of categories, could be rewarding and lots of fun. I found the tips helpful and think one of the most important tips to remember will be to encourage students to speak English in class as much as possible. I have learnt to expect some students will experience problems and that, as a teacher, I will need to keep them motivated. Praise and encouragement, as well as, creating a relaxed and supportive atmosphere will be key. I have learnt that I may be required to teach one-to-one lessons, which will obviously be intensive and can be geared towards the individual student's needs. I think, after studying this course, that I will find teaching children most rewarding. Children may prove more challenging to manage than adults but I now feel more confident that I will be able to keep lessons fun, varied and keep up a lively pace. I also realise I will need to be well prepared and organised and make sure suitable materials are available. I have learnt that it is a good idea to begin with a firmer approach that can gradually be relaxed than try to regain control after it has been lost.I am aware that it is vitally important, as a teacher, you are fair and consistent in your approach, as well as, in your attitude towards individual students. I have learnt that I may be called upon to teach English for Specific Purposes. Clearly, it is useful to find out what the students want and need prior to starting the course. To establish the needs of students, for example, requiring 'Business English' I found the 'Needs Analysis' sample helpful. I have also learnt that I may be required to teach either mono or multilingual classes. I realise it is more likely that multilingual students are going to be studying in an English-speaking country and therefore have more exposure to the language. However, monolingual classes are more likely to have students speaking their home country's native language. I now understand there are advantages and disadvantages to teaching students in both these situations.
