The unit introduces the course books as a very emotive issue for many teachers. While some teachers like using them a lot ,others despise them, stating that the choice to use or not and if using it ,which one to use can be a very complicated issue. The unit points out that teachers often have to create their own materials to either supplement the course book or replace sections that are not suitable for the class due to the fact that they are dealing with the reality rather than the ideal situation where all the books and materials needed are available. The unit give the reasons and advantages of the teacher creating their own materials and points out that this is usually more interesting, more relavant and a welcome change from the course book to students. Two groups of materials are indicated; authentic and created materials ,giving examples of such materials and the reasons for using each group. For example magazines or brochure for authentic materials and role-play cards and picture stories for created materials. The unit also takes a look at course book contents, their advantages and disadvantages, the best way of using them and points that, Headway, reward and English Files series for British English are probably the most commonly used. The unit cites four different options for course books; omit, replace, supplement and adapt. Here adivce to consider if a teacher is opportuned to choose a course book for a particular class is given.aspects like; price, availability in the local market; the design best to be attractive, methodology, balance of skills covered, difficulty level progression, its syllabus, the topics if interesting, teacher?s guide and the ancillary materials that accompany the course book should be analysed. From this unit I have learnt four important options of a course book; taking care not to omit too much, if I replace similar materials it should be appropriate,I can supplement materials to reinforce a language point or extend students? engagement with the language taught and to adapt in my own style which could be more fun.All these allow for flexibility to the needs of my students. The unit has also taught me on the best ways to use a course book; like not using it for the whole lesson and applying the above four options could be more achieving.
