Some of the types of special groups are beginners, young learners, business English, individuals, and monolingual versus multilingual. There are guidelines for teaching each of these types. The beginner groups can also be broken down further into true beginners who have no English experience or exposure, false beginners who may have had some previous exposure but may have forgotten it, adult beginners and young beginners, and beginners with no experience with the Roman alphabet. Adult beginners may have made the decision to study English on their own and so might be more motivated. Young beginners may not have self-motivation but tend to pick up language more readily than adults. Beginners with no experience of the Roman alphabet will need very basic instruction for reading and writing skills. Young learners or children need to have variety in the class activity to keep their attention. The teaching needs to be fun. Using games, oral repetition, lively activities, much praise and encouragement, variety in class settings, and visual aids will help make the learning fun. Teaching individuals will entail having a clear understanding of their needs and interests in order to plan the lessons. It is necessary to teach all the skill sets even though the student may want to focus solely on one, such as speaking. There are positives and negatives in teaching monolingual and multilingual groups. In a monolingual groups the students can help each other in the native language. This can be a positive with lower level students but may be a negative with higher level students. With a multilingual group the only common language is English and that can be a positive because it results in more exposure and practice in English. One key item in teaching Business English is that the teacher does not need to be an expert in the field of business. Most of the English taught in Business English is general English that may be used in a certain way for the particular business. It is important to be professional in appearance and manner when teaching Business English clients. In a Business English class there may be a variety of ages, skill levels, company responsibilities, and motivation. For this reason it is prudent to start with a Needs Analysis and a Group Needs Negotiation in order to plan the course.
