Teaching beginners is very different from teaching advanced level students. A teacher needs to remember that students are starting from very different experience levels with English, and even beginners start at different levels; they may not have experience with the Roman alphabet, they may or may not know the alphabet and the way the letters sound, or they may have been exposed to English before. Pretests can help determine a student's level at an individual level, but in class settings, the teacher should bear in mind the class' reasons for learning English, previous experience with English, and especially how they plan to use what they learn. Younger and beginning classes can have the most challenges for teachers, because students may not be highly motivated or able to focus in class, and at a low level progress may seem slow. When teaching beginners in a group, effective tactic usually include pair work and group work, full support and encouragement when students speak in English, assigning homework for practice, asking many questions, and using as many visual aids and demonstration as possible to avoid students' reverting to their first language. When teaching children, the teacher should use a heightened energy level to convey excitement and motivate students to participate, use lots of patience and work with students to correctly pronounce syllables using a higher pitch and exaggerated intonation than usual, and use frequent positive reinforcement. Individual lessons are ideal with any level to focus solely on the needs of one student giving both student and teacher more freedom to choose topics of interest and truly tailor to the students' best learning style and needs, although group-style activities will be impossible. While business knowledge is surely helpful when teaching Business English, all a good teacher should need is a basic knowledge. In these cases, the client is likely proficient in their own business already but may just lack the ability to communicate well in English, or want to practice. More advanced student groups, such as business English students or others learning English for a specific purpose, should be able to clearly define their needs and goals, and have a larger part in working with their teacher to organize class syllabus, expectations, lessons, or schedules in order to meet those goals.
