Reading and listening are critical receptive skills that can be used either for a purpose, like figuring out directions, or for entertainment, like pleasure reading, or a combination of both. Problem areas can arise with reading and writing because it can be difficult for students to grasp the full meaning of what is being said or written if there are words or grammatical structures they haven't encountered before. To help, teachers should pre-teach vocab that will come up during the piece; select texts and audio clips that are at a suitable level, and avoid authentic texts for beginners; and choose engaging topics that create interest with comprehension tasks to solidify understanding.
