This unit outlines two of the four skills that are needed to effectively teach a language. These skills are the difference between teaching a language as an article to be studied, and teaching a language as a skill to be used. Understanding how these skills relate to how people learned their first language is valuable information when trying to teach another language. We start with listening and reading in part because when we learn our first language it is through receptive skills before productive skills. Listening to a native speaker is invaluable of course, but reading allows students to have access to the language even outside the classroom.
