Course materials can add value to a lesson or if over-used cause boredom. Course books work well when used in moderation, gives a little structured flow of learning for the study phase. However I want my students engaged and focused in the lesson, if there is too much book time that vibrancy depreciates and the atmosphere becomes stale. From recent experience, not all the material I selected worked for every kid, so I had to have backup activities in place. Students work at various speeds and have a range of different skills. So I've had to have on hand extra material for those that speed ahead, to keep them challenged and motivated in the lesson.
