Classroom management was the topic of this unit. The material discussed physical presence and voice in the classroom, the pros and cons of different student group arrangements, the set-up of the classroom itself, the advantages of student and teacher talking time, and how a teacher can give effective instructions, establish rapport and maintain discipline. I found this unit relatively short and straightforward. The information was easy to get through given my experience as an ALT. I felt proud of myself because a lot of the advice provided, I had already discovered and put into practice on my own through trial and error. Some examples include; varying my voice volume and speaking pace to keep the students engaged (they were more likely to fall asleep if I spoke slowly); using gestures to get students attention or to convey meaning (using the Japanese gestures for numbers); and devoting time to think of simple instructions to give students for an activity (if it didn't go well, I would evaluate what went wrong, devise a new plan and try again). After reflecting on this unit, I would like to work harder to memorize all my student's names, give them more praise, and use activities that require more pair work and student talk time.
