This unit gave my the opportunity to reflect upon the importance of really good lesson planning. I was reminded that lesson planning is an important component of the teaching-learning process. First of all, a planned lesson is just better than an unplanned one. There are several reasons why a planned lesson is better. One of them is that having a lesson plan helps the teacher maintain focus, especially when you have to teach younger students whose attention span is very short and who tend to disturb the class. Another reason is that kids also notice when a teacher doesn?t really know what to do. If you show one sign of weakness, they will take advantage of it. Kids respond very well to structure and regularity, and planning out your lessons gives them that structure. Kids also respond to moments of uncertainty during a lesson ? by creating chaos. Also, a lesson plan keeps the teacher and the students on track. With planned lessons, you have a record of everything you?ve taught, so you can look back to it later. Last, but not least, lesson plans let you show off to other and to yourself what you?ve taught. Lesson plans give you not just a sense of accomplishment, but something tangible that reflects that accomplishment.
