I learned that using the international phonetic alphabet can be useful to teach the meaning of words, its part of speech and be helpful in pronunciation but it is important to use a dictionary that uses the IPA codes for American or British English as appropriate. As their are some key differences in pronunciation of words. I also learned that British speakers use words that Americans would consider entirely inappropriate. The unit used the word wanna in one of the examples and I have always been taught that this word should never be used and is slang. Some parts of this unit were not clear at all. Especially the part on peer dictation and what is meant. It seems like the instructions are often times more confusing than they need to be. Maybe its because I am more accustomed to American English and our word choices are different and simpler than many of the words chosen in the unit. Like the section on peer dictation. Why doesn't the unit explain specifically what is meant. One sentence starts out by saying \"Of course\" like something should be obvious and there is nothing obvious about the material presented. In fact the material is confusing and I don't see the benefit of writing something that no one can readily understand.
