Teach English in Dongmiao XiAng - Hechi Shi

Unit 14 treats the subject of course books and lesson materials. It starts by outlining the advantages and disadvantages of authentic materials versus created materials. In order to familiarize ourselves with differnt types of created materials, some examples are given on the following pages (e.g.:crosswords, word rearch, flash cards, picture stories, etc.) Then we see a discription of what a course book usually consists of, followed by a list of advantages and disadvantages related to the use of such materials. The section on course books continues by suggesting how to make the best use of them and how to analize a course book so it fits the needs of a particular class. At the end of this unit, we are incouraged to revue the materials seen in earlier units and analize them in order to determine if they match the criteria for a particular group of students. In unit 14, I learned about the many advantages for the use of course books in the classroom. But at the same time, I realized that it is a compromise in the sense that it can stop the teacher from being creative. I came to understand that sometimes the teacher has to create his/her own material or supplement material in order to make it as suitable and interesting as possible for the class.
