This unit looked at different ways to improve student's receptive skills of listening and reading with comprehension. There is the suggestion to mix non authentic texts with authentic texts focusing on the areas the students do know to build confidence. The caution to not over do it when pre teaching the difficult structures or vocabulary. I have tended to run down rabbit holes when I teach and this will help me be more deliberate to avoid this mistake. This brings to mind how the chapter started out saying that it was more than our eyes and ears that give us understanding of what we read or hear. Our minds have pre-existing models for the meaning of words or phrases. When I say, \"Going down a rabbit hole\" It is understood by Western cultures who have been influenced by \"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland\" By Lewis Carroll. It means you make something more chaotic or problematic by worrying about it too much. I have not seen the movie but I do understand the phrase from the wider culture, and it would make it easier for me as a teacher introducing authentic texts to my students, to explain the idioms ahead of time. This way I will expose the students to the text in a way that gives them confidence in their skills rather than in a discouraging way.
