In this unit, I learned about the different types of materials that can be used in class: authentic, created, and coursebooks. Each type has its own pros and cons. Thus, the usage of each depends on the strengths, weaknesses and needs of the teacher and students. Authentic materials can provide interesting, confidence building interactions with English, but the level of these materials is often too high for students. Created materials can be tailored for a specific class, but they are time intensive. A coursebook provides a methodical approach, but these books often become crutches. Based on the text in this unit, I'd submit that most effective teachers utilize a mix of all 3 material types.
