This unit was all about sounds. How to say words/sentences. Using the right intonation and stress. Learning how to pronounce things can be very difficult for foreign students. It is quite confusing looking at the words 'pear' and 'pair', sounding the same but looking different. Or 'rough' and 'through', looking the same but sounding different. I think whoever came up with the phonemic alphabet was very clever to do so. Although it's almost like learning a completely new language when starting, it is very helpful to be able to look in a dictionary and pronounce every word in there correctly. It takes a bit of time getting used to the symbols, but once you know them, it's pretty easy to work with.
