In this unit we have examined the use of testing before, during and at the end of a course. Various types of test such as placement, diagnostic, proficiency, etc. were discussed. A needs analysis is also recommended at the start of a course, and this may be given in the form of a questionnaire at the same time as a placement test if the group is very large, or may be split according to needs. Syllabus construction and design was also discussed with recommendations to base this on the needs and abilities of students. Allowance of a 'flexible' review class and an assessment should be made while planning course content. We also looked at some of the formal business English examinations available.
