Assessments are there to inform both the teacher and student where the student's current knowledge sits and what their next steps are. There must be a reason for assessing, whether it is to find out; - the students current knowledge, - how much they have learnt (or retained) over a period of time and lessons - what they need to move on to next External exams such as the American tests (TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC) and the Cambridge assessments are designed to measure the level of English a speaker of another language has in order to communicate, study or work in an English speaking environment. Their confidence, fluency and proficiency is addressed during these assessments through a combination of some or all of the four literacy areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
