This unit highlighted the differences between the receptive skills learnt in the previous unit, with productive skills (writing, speaking). The major components of these skills include both the 'accuracy' and 'fluency' of the writing/speaking skills. Neither one is more important than the other, and a good teacher would focus equally on the two. It was important to learn of why students may be reluctant to speak up in class, due to such reasons such as a simple lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes or even cultural reasons (for example, Japanese culture promotes the idea of listening to the teacher, as opposed to speaking to him or her) Lastly, it was useful to gain some ideas through the ESA lesson plans provided for how to teach these productive skills to students.
