Unit 15 presents different methods and ideas for evaluating and measuring student competence and progress, specifically 1) tutorials/student consults, 2) evaluation of the course by students, and 3) tests. The unit also describes common types of tests used both in the classroom (i.e. placement tests, progress tests, practice tests) and externally to measure competence/proficiency in English. Some of the common external examinations for which students might be preparing include: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, and Cambridge Assessment. Knowing the basic structures and desired outcomes of these external examinations will help me teach my students what they need to know not only for basic communication and understanding but also in order to prove their competence in a official capacity.
