Assessment is one tricky area of teaching that I never feel fully grounded in my beliefs. In some parts, I know that I must give many assessments in my class to help prepare students for common standardized tests that they both must take and do well on in order to gain greater success in the future. At the same time, I also realize the limitations on many of the standardized tests and I want to give students different ways to show their understanding via more critical thinking tasks or project based assessments. Reading through this lesson, I did reflect on how I do find a lot of benefit in letting students access the class and their work (even if sometimes they are poor at self-assessment) because I learn more about the students and my teaching style with these questions.
