Although starting with a new group of students can be daunting, it is also a wonderful opportunity to establish rapport and get to know them as human beings. There will be time for content after group cohesion and comfort is established. With larger classes, appointing helpers can keep the class running smoothly and offer many opportunities for group work and differentiated tasks, such as higher levels of challenge for more able students. Listening excerpts are often challenging - I believe this is due to the lack of scaffolding inherent in the task. Students either understand what they hear or they don't; there is no text to refer back to or writing to use as mental prompts. To counter this challenge, I offer constant listening practice and pre-teach specific words from the text.
