This unit covered a variety of learning strategies for teaching English as a Foreign Language. The strategy employed by this course follows the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) approach. In the engage stage the goal is to have all students participate, free of correction. This is accomplished through a variety of games like I'm going on holiday and I am taking.... In the study stage, the emphasis is on learning a particular study point of the English language. For example, completing worksheets on correct verb tense might be used. The third stage is the Engage stage. Here, the students work on an activity that utilizes previous language learned as well as the new concept learned. Examples might be to create a travel brochure for their hometown. There are three ways to structure the lessons, the straight arrow method, boomerang method, and patchwork method. When correcting students, it is important to recognize the difference between a mistake and an error. Mistakes might be a slip of the tongue or something that is quickly self-corrected, whereas an error is a consistent mistake that leads to confusion. Correcting is best if the student finds and corrects the error, or other students help correct the error. If needed, the teacher will correct the error.
