In unit 12 I have learned that productive skills are speaking and writing which are equally important as receptive skills. We can use accuracy and fluency activities to practice our productive skills. Accuracy activities are consentrated on producing and correct language while fluency activities are consentrated on allowing the students to experiment and be creative with the language. It is important that the teacher encourage the students to speak since many students can seem reluctant to speak in the classroom. The teacher can use various techniques to encourage interactions like pair/group work, controlled and guided practice before fluency activities, making speaking activities purposeful, careful planning and allowing students to think before they speak. Handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation is our focus while teaching writing skills. Many of the same principles need to be applied to writing activities as to speaking activities. We shall encourage creative writing as it engages the students and the finished work usually provides them with a sense of pride. There are a lot of games that can be used in the classroom, usually during the activate phase, to teach productive skills. This can be helpful as both children and adults usually enjoy playing games.
