Unit 14 discusses course books and various materials teachers can use in the classroom. There re two types of materials, authentic and non-authentic. Non-authentic can also be called created materials. Authentic materials are resources a native speaker would have in their day to day life. For example, radio programs, reading materials, movies and television shows. Created materials are flashcards, crossword puzzles, picture stories and role-play cards. There are pros and cons to using course books. Some of the pros are; it provides a graded syllabus for the student level, it offers continuity and progression. Some of the cons are; they don't always fit the needs of the students and students may be reluctant to use the book that has been chosen. This is a case where you have to make the best of the situation. Using the course book as a guide and supplementing or replacing items that are more suitable for the students. If a teacher is lucky enough to be able to chose the book a few factors need to be considered. What is the price of the book? Is the book available to all students? Is the book attractive? Does the book have a mix and balance of skills? The teacher needs to discern what works with what is provided and what needs to be adjusted for the sake of the students.
