This unit really illustrated how a teacher's attitude and preparedness affects students' ability to effectively learn the material. In the first video, the teacher did not appear to want to be there. Nor did he appear to care if his students were understanding the material. The teacher also did not speak clearly making it difficult to understand what he was saying, even for a native speaker. In the second video, the teacher started the class with a smile, introduced himself, and then learned the names of his students effectively drawing them into the lesson. This opened them up to the Engage phase of the lesson. This early willingness to participate carried through the entire lesson as the teacher himself was participating with miming and gesturing. He created a friendly environment in which to work, both for himself and for his students. His lesson plan was much clearer and involved more student participation. Students used the language more in the second video than in the first. That alone made the second class far more successful than the first. A teacher needs to bring a good attitude and a lively spirit to class if they want their students to approach the lesson with a good attitude and a lively spirit as well. The teacher is the example for the students.
