Unit 1, Teachers and Learners, examined the qualities, roles and responsibilities of teachers and students alike. The qualities of a good teacher relate to their personality (kind, patient, charismatic etc.), and their ability to form positive relationships with students within the class environment. For example, a good teacher should be able to correct a student without offending or effecting their motivation. There are many roles an effective teacher can utilize during a typical lesson. These range from teacher centred, for example, being a controller, through to student centred, for example, being a participant or equal in a class activity. I learnt that a teacher has a wide range of roles available to them in order to teach a lesson effectively, and being able to change roles within a class will help students to learn. For example, moving from a controller to a monitor role will help encourage more student participation. In addition, I found the prompter role, where we gently encourage students to find the answer for themselves very useful. This unit also touches on the qualities and roles of students. My main take-out was to be very aware of a students life stage, learning level and motivation, as these will help to determine the roles utilised when teaching.
