In this unit I have learnt the structure of past tenses is not dissimilar to the present tenses. By learning the rules I am beginning to be more confident in recognising similarities in form and usage of the tenses. I have learnt that all continuous forms are made up of the verb 'to be' plus the 'ing' form of the verb. Also, that perfect forms are made up of the verb 'to have' and the past participle form of the verb. Finally, I now know that all perfect continuous forms are made up of 'to have', as well as 'been', and the 'ing' form of the verb. Once again it is clear that irregular verbs will be tricky for students to learn as they do not follow a rule. Other mistakes will arise from the use of 'did' and 'did not' for questions and negatives. I have found the ideas for teaching the usages helpful as I will be able to support students in differentiating between the combination of past tenses. This unit has helped me to recognise typical student errors or mistakes that I may be likely to come across. I am sure these ideas will help me support students and make me more confident in my own teaching. I will need to revisit the past tenses but hopefully when learning about the future tenses I can become more familiar with the rules and how these relate to their form and usage.
