This unit is about the four different present tenses we use in the English language, the present simple, present continuous, present perfect and the present perfect continuous. The present simple is used to talk about present stories, facts, habits, permanent situations or to give directions. The present continuous is used to talk about actions that are going on during the time of speaking or temporary actions which don't necessarily have to be in progress in the moment. The present continuous is also used to describe a developing situation or a regular action at a certain point in time. The present perfect however, relates past events to the present. One would use it to talk about general experiences or to tell stories that began in the past and will most likely continue on in the future. Then there is the present perfect continuous which is used to talk about unfinished activities or activities which have recently finished but have a present result. In most foreign languages there is only one tense within the present tense therefore learning four present tenses might be quite confusing for the student to grasp at the beginning. It is very important that the teacher is very clear with how each tense is used to try and cause as little confusion as possible for the students.
