This Unit considers several important grammatical issues - modal auxiliary verbs, the passive voice, relative clauses and phrasal verbs. The 'Modals' part introduces the reader to the meanings that they add to the main verb and how they behave in present/future vs. past contexts. Several teaching ideas are suggested at the end of the part. The 'Passive Voice' part also deals with formation and usage issues, provides ideas for teachers and enumerates some typical student errors/mistakes. The 'Relative clauses' part defines a clause, classifies clauses into two main categories (independent and dependent), distinguishes relative clauses as a subcategory of dependent clauses and goes into defining and non-defining types of relative clauses analyzing a number of examples. The 'Phrasal verbs' part provides definition of the notion and classifies phrasal verbs into 3 types (intransitive, transitive separable, transitive inseparable). This Unit has given me answers to some of the questions that I've been asking myself as a teacher concerning the meanings of modal verbs. I have also found some interesting teaching ideas, such as teaching modals by showing students traffic or other signs and asking them to guess their meaning, or combining phrasal verbs into subject groups like 'driving'.
