This unit dealt with conditionals and reported speech. Conditionals are a part of speech that expresses pst, present or future possibilities, using two different clauses: (1) an if/when clause, which presents the condition that must be satisfied for the (2) main clause to be possible. There are five types of conditionals: zero (statement of facts in the present tense); first (a hypothetical outcome if a hypothetical condition is met); second (states a condition being met but in an \"unreal\" situation, i.e. something that probably would never happen); third (refers to a hypothetical past action leading to a hypothetical past outcome); and mixed (a hypothetical past action leading to a hypothetical outcome in the present). In reported speech, the speaker relays the words of a third party, but not as a direct quote. This usually results in a change of tense (with all tenses but past perfect). This was unit was very helpful to me in its presentation of the different conditionals. These are parts of speech that I use daily, the use of which I have long since forgotten how to articulate.. As native speakers, I feel that we forget how parts of speech are labeled once we are finished with our studies and are no longer called on to differentiate between these grammatical constructs.
