This topic discusses about the Past tense and the various forms of Past tense. Past tense relate to past time period. There are four past tense forms - Past simple, Past continuous, Past perfect, past perfect continuous. We use the simple past tense for an action completed at some time in the past. eg. I saw the movie last Sunday. Past simple is used: a) Past action when time is given b) When the time is asked about c) When the action clearly took place at a definite time even though the time is not mentioned. d) Sometimes the time become definite as a result of question and answer in the present perfect. The Past Continuous is formed from the past tense of 'be' with the 'ing' form of the verb. We use Past continuous to talk about the past : a) for which something continued before and after the past action.ex: The children did their studies when I got home. b) for interrupted past actions. Ex. While I was dancing, the bell rang. c) Used without a time expression. ex: it was getting darker. To teach the Past continuous we can use the games like story telling, detective game etc. Past Perfect : We use the word 'had' and past participle for the past perfect. Ex. I had finished the work. Past perfect continuous is formed with the 'had been' and the ' ing ' form of the verb.
