This unit covered the introduction of new vocabulary, grammar structures and functions to learners of English. It covered the things to consider when selecting new language, what is important to teach, and potential ideas for the ESA method. I think the unit raised some interesting points on planning lessons, and the important parts of learning; I agree with the majority of points which students need to be aware of, especially teaching of pronunciation and spelling. In the context of Japan, where I teach, the teachers often result to the use of their own language (katakana) to to teach English words, which leads to (often hilarious) mistakes in both pronunciation and spelling. However it also critically impacts on the students ability to learn new language properly. I do disagree with the test in that sometimes the origin or etymology of words can be interesting for students and aim in the retention of new language concepts. For example, the word fortnight, which derives from \"fourteen nights\". Overall, the unit was useful for me to consider, in that most of my lessons have been focused on the practical application of language already \"learned\" by students in earlier schooling, rather than the introduction of new language. I will implement some of these ideas in my next term.
