      Speaking and Writing are productive skills.  Reasons for productive skill use:  communicative purpose  they want to say something  they want to listen to something  They are interested in what is being said  Teachers must use the above reasons to help motivate and engage students in communication.  Accuracy is speaking the language correctly.  Fluency is more concerned with effectiveness and flow of communication.  Fluencey and accuracy are equally important.  Types of speaking Activities:  controlled activities (accuracy) Guided activities (accuracy) Creative Communication (fluency)  reasons students are reluctant to interaction.  lack of confidence fear of making a mistake peer intimidation lack of interest in topic previous learning experiences cultural reasons  Techniques to encourage interaction  pair work  group work  plenty of controlled guided practice before fluency activities.  make speaking activities purposeful  change classroom dynamics  careful planning  time to think about what the student is going to say.  writing skills that can be a challenge  Handwriting  spelling  layout and punctuation  Creative writing should be encouraged.  There are two kinds of classroom games, competitive and noncompetitive.  They can be further classified as linguistic games and communicative games
