This unit discusses modal auxiliary verbs, which can add meaning to the main verb and to express obligation, possibility, probability, permission, prohibition, ability, and advice. Teaching ideas given were role-play exercises, rules, and guessing the meaning of signs. The next part of the unit discusses passive voice, which changes the focus of a sentence compared to active voice and is used when it isn?t known or is not important who performs the action. Another part of the unit discussed relative clauses. There are three categories of clauses: independent, dependent, and relative. Defined relative clauses are introduced by a relative pronoun and non-defined do not include a relative pronoun. The info in a non-defining clause is not essential to the sentence?s meaning and can be removed, but in a defining clause the information is essential. The next section was on phrasal verbs. There are three types: intransitive, transitive, and transitive inseparable. They consist of a verb and one/two particles and act as one item. These can be difficult for students to understand and it is helpful to teach them as vocabulary items along with using the phrasal verbs that have been taught during uncontrolled practice/conversations. The unit also suggested teaching these using a specific subject.
