Unit 11 covered the teaching of receptive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening, as opposed to productive skills such as speaking and writing. Receptive skills are employed for two broad purposes: to accomplish some goal, or to be entertained. When one is reading or listening a contextual understanding of the information is important in addition to comprehension of the language. Many sub-skills are involved in receptivity such as prediction based on previous knowledge, quick scanning for specific information, deduction, summarizing, and comprehending details. Teaching receptive skills is a vast and complex topic that relates to many other aspects of language teaching, and frankly, teaching in general. Some techniques can be identified. One can pre-teach vocabulary prior to engaging in a lesson, while balancing this approach with the need for students to be able to deduce meaning from context. Another technique is the proper mixing of authentic and non-authentic texts. When teaching receptive skills, ensure that the topics of texts and examples are interesting to the students. Engaging the students by creating interest is fundamentally important. Tasks of the appropriate difficulty that are challenging, yet achievable, are ideal. Example course materials are provided.
