The importance of lesson planning is to guide the teacher in his/her efforts and expectations of the class lecture. A lesson plan can be useful for a teacher to refer to during the lesson and also is a recorded document of what the class has done and what materials/activities the teacher utilised for that day. They key to creating a successful lesson plan is to keep things simple, do not try to script the lesson, have a solid structure and maintain the same structure throughout the lesson, anticipate the time it will take to carry out activities, be flexible and open to changes in plans, and ensure there is a balance between skills and activities. Organisation is also very important for a teacher to be successful. Having the materials on hand is key, as well as making sure the equipment in the classroom is working, the materials needed for the lesson are easily accessible, the seating is arranged as desired, and the teacher is prepared for small talk with the students while they enter the classroom to break the ice and ease the mood into one that is comfortable and prepared for learning. One of the most important items to include in a lesson plan is the learner objective, which states what the students will be able to do at the end of the lesson. This is a guide for the teacher to check if the goal has been met, what improvements are needed for the next class, what worked well with this lesson plan and what didn't. The theme around the lesson and how it fits with past and future lessons is also important because this can ensure a balance of previous material covered being reviewed during new subject material. Teachers must anticipate problems that could arise for themselves and students and prepare solutions to these issues ahead of time, so that class time is not wasted when/if they come up during lecture. Planning the activities and phases include predicting the amount of time they will take and who is being involved. After classes end, it is very useful for a teacher to self-evaluate. Planning a sequence of lessons can save the teacher time, but it must be remembered that more often than not changes will have to be made continuously. A teacher must be able to have flexibility with plans, review and build goals into the sequence of lessons, make sure past material is continually reviewed so it is not lost/forgotten, and there is variety in the activities and all skills are given equal coverage time.
