This unit gives an over all to introduction teaching by addressing the two key subjects - teacher and students. Each of these play different roles and responsibilities in the learning process to see optimal results. As a teacher, it is important to recognise the roles and responsibilities we play in each stages of teaching to help our students in their learning journey. Failing to do so may result in students losing interest and motivation of the language. For example, too much correction on error without be sensitive to the student may cause the student to lose confidence to explore the language and slowly lose the motivation to learn. A good facilitator engages the interest and attention span of the class to learn. There are important qualities a teacher should have to be a good teacher. Similarly, students should also have good learning attitudes and posture to be a good learner. Adult learners and young learners have major differences. Different approaches should be adopted when teaching different age group for optimal learning results. There are also different challenges faced when teaching adult and young learners. Young learners tend to be less motivated to learn as compared to adult learners. The latter usually makes the decision to learn English for various motivational reasons while the former is usually asked to do so. Hence, we may find behavioural problems more evident with young learners. However, young learners are more adaptable and have a more open-minded approach to new learning experiences and methods. Adult learners, on the other hand, have a background of learning experience that can hinder the learning process. There are 6 language levels to access the language ability of students. I find this is helpful in assessing students at where they are in their language ability and what methods and approaches to adopt when teaching them English. Overall I learn that whether adult or young learners, both need to be motivated to learn English well. The teacher plays a very important role in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the students to be able to use the right approaches, methods and tools to facilitate the learning of the students. The love and passion for teaching is one of the most important qualities a teacher should have. Teaching is a challenging, yet rewarding career. Without passion, it will be an uphill task to overcome those challenges faced, to stay focus and keep the teaching vision clear.
