Unit two Highlights methods for teaching an ESL class, It gives guidelines for lesson structure. Lesson structure is categorized using several lesson formats; these include The straight arrow method, the boomerang, and the patchwork formats. These formats are a way to arrange the various phases of lessen presentation and flow. The main elements utilized and arranged are the Engage, Activate, and Study phases. The engage phase is where the lesson objective is delivered, for example; a new word, phrase, or idea is presented. This can be done in lecture format, or as a prop or game. This is primarily time for the teacher to speak and present. The Activate phase then has the students participate and practice what was outlined and presented in the engage phase. In this phase the students have most of the talk time and are given leeway to make mistakes and to self correct and correct each other. the teacher usually corrects and assists with students observed difficulties after the phase is complete, this is a practice phase. The study phase then reaffirms the other two phases with a worksheet or student creation utilizing the presented information. This would be an example of the straight arrow method. These phases may be organized in various ways as described above, multiple phases and arrangements may be utilized. This represents a task based learning approach, as well as lexical. Task based and lexical learning seem to be predominant in modern language training, however there are several different teaching methods which have, can, and are utilized; either exclusively or in combination with task and lexical based learning, or grammar translation. The unit also discusses many teaching methods to be used in class, such as various games, props, black board utilization, and study materials. It also gives ideas as to where to find more in depth examples of these materials to be utilized. Through these phases and worksheets teacher assistance and correction is also suggested, when, how, where. It also outlines that all students should be involved and engaged with the class and that participation should be greatly encouraged. There are also different methods and activities for different levels of study. This unit was largely new to me as I have not studied teaching methods before. The concepts once understood help with teacher confidence as well as in ideas of how to best approach the goal of teaching English in a successful manner.
